What’s Winterizer?

Why it’s the Most Important Lawn Care Application of the Year

While you may be focusing on getting ready for a slew of upcoming holidays, your lawn is getting ready for winter. You can help strengthen your grass by applying a winterizer fertilizer. It’s one of the most important fall lawn care tasks to do before another dormant season.

What is Winterizer?

This term applies to a specially formulated fertilizer you apply in the fall to prepare your lawn for winter and promote healthy growth in the spring. Winterizer products are high in potassium. When you’re reading labels, notice the K level in the NPK ratio. A boost in potassium strengthens grass roots. A strong root system improves winter hardiness, making grass more resistant to damage from frost and disease.

Like many lawn tasks, timing is integral to applications. You want to treat your lawn while the grass is still growing so that nutrients are absorbed. Grass growth may slow and stop as it goes dormant, but the roots continue to develop until the ground freezes.

Winterizer Works Below the Surface

After you apply winterizer in the fall, you may not see results right away. This doesn’t mean it’s not working. These nutrients are getting stored in the roots over the winter, supplementing the grass throughout the dormant season, and waiting for temperatures to rise again to show off a thicker, more vibrant lawn.

Something else you may not see? Disease. When roots are well nourished, they’re less susceptible to disease like snow mold that can occur over the winter. Stronger roots are also more drought-tolerant since they can access water deeper in the soil.

So what will you see? Faster green-up in the spring. Once the weather warms, the grass taps into its stored energy. Even if it was stressed from drought and foot-traffic, winterizer helps it recover by replenishing lost nutrients so it can thrive.
